This week, Wheel of Fortune is honoring those who have served our country with “Veterans Week,” hosted by Pat Sajak, who previously served in Vietnam, himself. This connection to the contestants spotlighted this week may have sparked even more sympathy from the longtime game show host.

On Tuesday night’s (Nov. 7) episode, Pete Digeronimo, who served in the Coast Guard and Air Force for 23 years per Wheel of Fortune with Andy Nguyen, opened up about recently marrying his wife Lorraine and shared about their three children.

According to TV Insider, Digeronimo scored a Palm Springs vacation with a score of $19,300, which bought him a shot at the Bonus Round. Selecting “Thing” as the category,  he was given the letters “RSTLNE” prior to picking “CDPA,” as well.

The puzzle then read as follows: “_A _ _ A __LE _ _ R_.” Sajak pointed out, “A couple of A’s, and that is it.”

After Sajak gave him ten seconds to ““try and talk it out,” Digeronimo guessed “parallel card.” Sajak tried to comfort him, noting that he “would have said the same thing.” However, the answer was ultimately “valuable work.” Digeronimo unfortunately lost out on $40,000.

Fans came to his defense on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter), perplexed as to how the phrase “valuable work” would be considered a thing.

One wrote, “valuable work is not a thing!” Another seemed to be quite riled up, claiming that “nobody has EVER said Valuable Work. Ever,” and even went so far as to call the show a “fucking joke.”

According to ABC 7 News, the show’s first ever “Veterans Week” took place in 2015, and Sajak had expressed how his time serving “gives [him] great respect for the men and women who are serving now in an atmosphere unlike my time.”

“They give up a lot of comforts of life, they give up a lot of their security,” he explained in 2015. “I have great respect for what they do.”
