Late night host Jimmy Kimmel has been tapped to host the 96th annual Academy Awards ceremony yet again.
After hosting in 2017, 2018, and 2023, Kimmel has become a mainstay on the Oscars stage as of late. He was even there for that major envelope mix-up that named La La Land Best Picture instead of Moonlight.
Fortunately for him, he missed out of the 2022 Oscars where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage. But that didn’t stop him from referencing the infamous moment in his opening monologue at the Oscars earlier this year.
“We want you to have fun, we want you to be safe, and most importantly, we want me to be safe,” he joked. “If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence anytime during this show, you will be presented the Oscar for Best Actor and be permitted to give an 18-minute long speech.”
He added, “There will be no nonsense tonight. We have no time for shenanigans. You told us you want all the categories back and we listened.”
Ratings for the Oscars reached a three-year high during this year’s telecast, with 18.7 million viewers tuning in.
Now that it has its host, the 2024 Oscar Awards are finally starting to take shape.
With both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA on strike for much of 2023, many feared that the Oscars would suffer the same fate as the Emmy Awards and get delayed. But it looks like the Academy Awards will proceed as planned now that both strikes have come to an end and celebs have kickstarted their campaigns.
ABC also set a creative team for the broadcast.
Kimmel’s wife, Molly McNearney, who also works on Jimmy Kimmel Live as co-head writer, will also return to executive produce.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Las Vegas residency producer Raj Kapoor was named showrunner and executive producer for the broadcast. This is his first time serving in that role after working on the telecast for the last seven years.
Kapoor will be joined by executive producer Katy Mullan and director Hamish Hamilton.
The 96th annual Academy Awards will air live on ABC on Sunday, Mar. 10.
