Margot Robbie Doesn’t Seem To Think There Will Be A ‘Barbie’ Sequel

After Greta Gerwig‘s take on Barbie was a worldwide hit at the box office, there’s naturally been a lot of talk about a potential sequel.

The 2023 film starred Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Helen Mirren narrated the story.

In a new interview with The Associated Press, Robbie shared her thoughts on whether or not a follow-up movie is a possibility.

“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something,” said Robbie. “Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”

Barbie was so successful at the box office that it grossed over $1.4 billion at the box office, which leads Robbie to note that “original films can still hit huge.”

“It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake,” she continued. “It can be totally original. It can still be big given the big budget to do that. And just because there’s a female lead doesn’t mean it’s not going to hit all four quadrants which is, you know, I think a misconception that a lot of people still have.”

The actress feels that Barbie‘s success will allow future filmmakers to “have big original ideas and be given the budget to execute them properly.”

Barbie also starred Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya, Dua Lipa and Nicola Coughlan as different variations of Barbie.

In addition to Gosling, The Kens were portrayed by Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Scott Evans and John Cena.

The supporting cast included America Ferrera, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera and Connor Swindells.
