America has gone to war with itself in a chilling first look at Alex Garland’s Civil War, which is set to hit theaters in April 2024. Whether it’s the perfectly timed release date that comes months before the 2024 election or the film’s unrealistic allyship between Texas and California, the upcoming movie has sparked plenty of chatter on social media.

Starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman and Jesse Plemons, Civil War portrays a war-torn version of the United States, where “19 states have seceded,” the government “uses air strikes against American citizens,” and the Capitol “shoots journalists on sight.”

Offerman, who portrays a fictional “three-term” president, is heard saying, “Citizens of America, the so-called Western forces of Texas and California have suffered a very great defeat at the hands of the United States military,” while Plemons cocks his rifle at a group of Americans who hesitate to explain “what kind of Americans” they are.

Following the release of the trailer, social media users took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their shock over the unlikelihood of Texas, a red state, teaming up with California, a blue state, in the event of a civil war.

“No way would California and Texas ever team up,” one wrote, while another added, “In what world would Texas and California unite? 😂”

A third person said, “They had to make CA & TX team up to give it a streak of unbelievability…otherwise we’d all panic 😅.”

While some felt uneasy about the film’s concept — “This hits too close to home,” one wrote, while someone else pointed out, “Interesting time to release this movie lmao” — others were already clearing their calendars for April 26.

“I have FUCKING chills,” one social media user said. “Idk if it’s because this feels like [it’s] so possible in the times we live in or that trailer just looked BADASS!!!”

Another added, “With the 2024 election looming, CIVIL WAR just might be the most important movie we see at the cinema next year.”

Civil War is slated to premiere in theaters on Friday, April 26. And because of a new deal penned between Warner Bros. Discovery and A24, it will later become available to stream on Max.
