André Braugher, the actor best known for his roles on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street, has died. He was 61.

His publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed the sad news to NPR. According to Allen, Braugher passed away on Monday (Dec. 11) following a brief illness.

Most would recognize Braugher — who attended both Stanford University and the Juilliard School’s Drama Division — for his fan-favorite role as Capt. Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, in which he starred from 2013 to 2021. Throughout his time on the police procedural comedy, he garnered four Emmy nominations for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

The actor also appeared as Det. Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993 to 1998. The role landed him his first Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He later won his second Emmy for his work on FX’s 2006 miniseries Thief. He also starred on other shows like Last Resort, Men of a Certain Age and Hack.

Aside from his work on television, Braugher also made appearances in a number of films. The star made his big-screen debut as Cpl. Thomas Searles in the 1989 war drama Glory, before starring in movies like City of Angels, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Spike Lee’s Get on the Bus.

He was most recently cast in the upcoming Netflix series The Residence, which began production before the WGA strike and planned to resume in January, according to Deadline.

Braugher’s Hollywood peers, including his former Brooklyn Nine-Nine castmates, have taken to social media to mourn the loss of the actor.

“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent,” Terry Crews wrote on Instagram. “This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you.”

He continued, “Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like.”

Chelsea Peretti, who also starred on the sitcom, added, “Will miss your dulcet tones. Forever lucky to have gone on such a journey with you. Ringside seat. You were so funny to me and the epitome of still waters run deep. I will always cherish our conversations, often with me hanging in your doorway barring your exit, and the insane opportunity to be your sidekick. Is it weird that I am also grieving for what Captain Holt meant to Gina? I really hoped and knew I would see you again. Hate that I won’t.”

Mike Royce, who co-created Men of a Certain Age, tweeted, “This is impossible for me to process. He was [the] best actor in the world. An incredible human being. An incomprehensible loss.”

Braugher is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabso; sons Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley; brother Charles Jennings; and his mother, Sally Braugher.
