Drew Barrymore likes to keep things light and fun. On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress-turned-talk show host explained exactly why she mostly stars in romantic comedies.
During the Drew’s News segment, Barrymore and Ross Mathews read a new Psychology Today report that claims people who watch romantic movies have “higher commitment and satisfaction rates” in their relationship.
“Does that mean that you’re responsible for a lot of peoples’ long-lasting relationships?” Mathews asked, to which Barrymore replied, “I never thought of that.”
Barrymore’s acting credits include a long list of rom-coms, from 50 First Dates and Never Been Kissed, to The Wedding Singer and Music and Lyrics — and according to the star, there is a reason for her dedication to the genre.
“I never really wanted to make dark films,” she told the audience. “I just thought that I would live a happier life if I was telling happier stories because I feel like at the end of even a good day, let alone [a] hard day, we’ve gotta have something there that’s more joyful.”
She continued, “It’s like this show. I just want people to be happy. It’s such an important thing to me. And we can have a major effect on one another’s happiness. We can. It’s palpable. So I want to live my life that way.”

This isn’t the first time this week that Barrymore has brought up her love of rom-coms. On Wednesday morning’s (Dec. 20) episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, she toyed with the idea of remaking 50 First Dates with Jason Momoa, who has yet to make his debut in the genre.
“If you were to do a romantic comedy, is there a film — let’s just play a game — is there a rom-com you would ever remake?” Barrymore wondered, to which Momoa joked, “Yeah, maybe 50 More Dates … You need to come back to the islands and meet a Hawaiian man.”
Here’s hoping that 2024 brings a new rom-com starring Barrymore as its leading lady!
