Danny DeVito was no beauty school dropout. On today’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the star opened up to host Kelly Clarkson about working as a beautician long before making it big in the acting industry.

According to DeVito, who had no plans to go to college after graduating high school, the job opportunity came along when his older sister, Angie, offered to send him to beauty school so he could work in her beauty parlor.

“She said, ‘Why don’t you come to work for me? I got the beauty parlor.’ I said, ‘Angie, do I look like a beautician to you? What am I gonna do?'” he recalled. “She says, ‘I’m gonna send you to school.’ I said, ‘OK.'”

As one might expect, DeVito was “dragging [his] feet like crazy” leading up to the start of school. However, he had a quick change of tune when he went in for his first day of classes.

“I walk up these stairs really hesitant and I open the door and in this big room with all these stations with little wig blocks and stuff all around — behind [them] was a coffee bar and there were 35 women in there all my age,” he said.

DeVito continued, “And then I went, ‘What!’ I went immediately — I didn’t go in — I went downstairs … and called Angie. I said, ‘Angie, I owe you for the rest of my life.'”

The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star joked that it was “seriously like dying and going to heaven.” While the actor said “working was good” since he learned all sorts of techniques like “pin-curls and comb-outs and teasing,” he quipped that the “study” (in air quotes) was “really woah!”

Clarkson, on the other hand, was not at all surprised by DeVito’s experience. As soon as the comedian mentioned his female peers, she called out, “I knew you were going there!”
