Sharon Stone just revealed that she tried her hand at pitching a Barbie film, but was not met with a positive reaction.

The Basic Instinct star shared this intel in the comments section of America Ferrera’s recent Instagram post, which shared a video of her acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Awards, per Variety.

“I was laughed out [of] the studio when i came w[ith] the Barbie idea in the 90s w[ith] the support of the head of Barbie,” she commented. “How far we’ve come. Thank you ladies for your courage and endurance.”

Other stars have come forward about their initial attachments to the Barbie film in the wake of its success, including Anne Hathaway, Amy Schumer, and Diablo Cody, the last of whom claimed that she “shit the bed” while attempting to write a script that captured “an anti-Barbie.”

“They wanted a girl-boss feminist twist on Barbie, and I couldn’t figure it out because that’s not what Barbie is,” she told GQ in a profile published in July.

With respect to Hathaway and Schumer, the former deemed the film starring Margot Robbie “the best possible version” on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, while Schumer posted on Instagram that she “really enjoyed” the movie.

Ferrera was honored with the SeeHer award at Sunday night’s (Jan. 14) ceremony for “her contribution to more authentic portrayals of women and girls.” This award’s previous recipients have included Janelle Monae (2022), Halle Berry (2021) and Zendaya (2020).

Outside of her poignant speech this past weekend, her powerful monologue as Gloria in Greta Gerwig‘s film has been lauded by many, including director James Cameron.

“You basically sum up thousands of years of the female dilemma in one minute,” he told Gerwig during their Variety “Directors on Directors” interview in December 2023. ” I don’t think it’s ever been done as succinctly and hit the mark so perfectly.”

Barbie is streaming on Max.
