It’s out with the old, and in with the new(er words and phrases)!

According to The U.S. Sun, Friday night’s (Jan. 19) episode of Jeopardy! served up some modern vocab that certainly surprised viewers tuning in at home, particularly when host Ken Jennings shared the following clue: “Similar to LOL, IJBOL is short for ‘I just did this.'”

The slang term, which stands for “I just burst out laughing,” was correctly guessed by Erin Portman, who competed alongside Rachel Clark and Bryan White. Fans were flustered by the clue, and of course flocked to X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) to weigh in.

Many can’t believe the modern acronym made its way onto such a timeless trivia show, as one fan joked that “this is not the escapism” they had been looking for.

Someone shared a hilarious screenshot of texts exchanged between them and their mom, the latter of whom felt she was “so hip at Jeopardy!” for correctly answering both “IJBOL” and “slay.”

One teased that “they’re trying to keep the contestants relevant,” while another fan even poked fun at Jennings for his pronunciation of the acronym as “a full word.”

Jennings has previously addressed his own use of modern lingo. On Good Morning America last May, he said that his “kids are terrified” of him employing any “Gen-Z slang” hosting, per TV Insider.

“You know, I can say, ‘Tonight on Jeopardy, I’m gonna go to a contestant and say, ‘You’re so real for that, bestie’, and they’re like, ‘Dad, do not. I swear, DO NOT do that,'” he said. “‘Like, I will die if you do that.’”

The host also stopped by Live with Kelly and Mark this morning, where he noted that while his children “act faintly embarrassed” of him hosting Jeopardy!, his “younger kid” has sent jokes of his “to his group chat with his friends.”

“I made the group chat!” he exclaimed. “So on some level, I must be slightly cool. Jeopardy!-cool, it’s maybe a low level of cool.”

Jeopardy! airs on weeknights at 7/6c. Check out the website for your local listings.
