The 2024 Oscar nominees caused quite a stir this week when Barbie director Greta Gerwig and lead actress Margot Robbie were shut out of the directing and acting categories. The 2023 blockbuster received eight nominations — with Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera both receiving acting noms and the film earning a Best Picture nod — but many fans were still outraged that the Academy snubbed Gerwig and Robbie, Hillary Clinton included.

The former presidential candidate took to X to show her support for the stars amid the ongoing controversy.

“Greta & Margot, while it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you,” she wrote. “You’re both so much more than Kenough. #HillaryBarbie.”

X users proceeded to have a field day with Clinton’s tweet.

“The patron saint of women taking L’s has spoken,” one user joked, referring to Clinton’s unsuccessful run for the U.S. presidency in 2016.

“What are we doing here? The film got 8 nominations. America, a Latina actress got a nom. WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?!” another user wrote.

Clinton was not the only person to speak out against the alleged snub.

In a statement, Gosling said he was “disappointed” Gerwig and Margot had not been “nominated in their respective categories” — although Gewig was nominated for her screenplay with Noah Baumbach — writing, “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.”

Ferrera also praised Gerwig and Robbie for their work on the film: “Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon,” she said of Gerwig, per Variety. “It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”

Though Robbie did not receive a nomination for Best Actress, she still received some recognition for her work as a producer on the film since it was nominated for Best Picture.

On the bright side, the 2024 nominees has many highlights worth celebrating, including Lily Gladstone’s historic nomination in the Best Actress category. She is the first Native American to ever be nominated in the category. Earlier this month, she became the first Native American to win a Golden Globe for the same honor.

The Oscars will be telecast on ABC on March 10 with Jimmy Kimmel set to host.
