An official cause of death for Saturday Night Live alum Dana Carvey‘s son, Dex Carvey, has been revealed two months after his passing.

According to an autopsy report, Dex died from an accidental drug overdose as traces of fentanyl, ketamine and cocaine were found in his system at the time of his death in November 2023. He was 32.

At the time, TMZ reported that Dex was found unresponsive on the floor after his girlfriend called 911. While first responders tried to resuscitate him, they were ultimately unsuccessful.

Dana and his wife, Paula Zwagerman, announced the heartbreaking news to the public in November.

“Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy,” they wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 32 years old. Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things–music, art, filmmaking; comedy–and pursued all of them passionately.”

They continued, “Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever. To anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers.”

On a recent episode of his Fly on the Wall podcast, Dana opened up about life since his son’s death, noting that he has been spending more time with his wife and his younger son.

“I’m kind of on the pain train with about millions of other people on this planet,” he told co-host David Spade. “And you don’t know how long you’re going to be on it or when it will stop or when it will get better.”

The Wayne’s World star added, “It’s me and my wife and our son’s private journey. We’re all together. And we do a lot of fun things. We hike, we go to church. You just want to make sure you keep moving.”
