Lucifer makes his first appearance? Charlie meets with the angels in Heaven? Angel is put to the ultimate test? The new Prime Video animated musical comedy Hazbin Hotel dropped a few (Cherri) bombs in its latest drop of episodes — just a week before the Season 1 finale.

The show, which first premiered Jan. 19, follows Princess of Hell Charlie (Erika Henningsen) as she opens a rehabilitation center for sinners, following an annual Extermination event where angels hunt those in Hell.

Hazbin Hotel is based on the viral YouTube pilot by Vivienne Medrano, who returns to showrun, and features original lyrics and music by Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg.

Episodes 5 and 6 — “Dad Beat Dad” and “Welcome to Heaven” — aired on Jan. 25 and advance the plot of the show in ways that left unsuspecting viewers in shock, especially given that there are only two more episodes in the season.

The fifth episode sees Jeremy Jordan making his first appearance as Charlie’s distant father Lucifer, a fallen angel who was damned to Hell after aspiring to give free will to all people. Charlie hesitantly invites her father to the hotel in hopes that he will set up a meeting for her with the leadership in Heaven so she can ask for support for her rehabilitation program and find out how to help her participants gain entry to Heaven.

Lucifer eventually agrees to make the call but warns Charlie, “I don’t want you to be crushed by them… like I was.” Charlie accepts the offer and announces that her girlfriend Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz) will be joining her for the meeting.

This sets up the major reveals in the following episode! Charlie and Vaggie arrive in Heaven and are welcomed by Saint Peter, voiced by Darren Criss in his debut appearance, and Charlie is swept away to explore the foreign city. Vaggie decides to lay low and stay at the hotel, where Adam (Alex Brightman) and Lute (Jessica Vosk), both exorcists, make an unsettling appearance.

The two antagonistic angels harass Vaggie and threaten to publicize that she is an angel and former exorcist, a secret that she has kept from Charlie and her friends. Well, now things are starting to make sense! Vaggie refuses to play their game and proceeds to be a supportive girlfriend to Charlie, only piping in with slight remarks during the important meeting about Charlie not getting overly aggressive.

During the meeting, Charlie asks the Seraph to divulge what gets a soul in heaven and they present three rules: act selfless, don’t steal, and stick it to the man. Charlie insists that her first rehabilitee Angel Dust (Blake Roman) is likely doing all of those things, and Adam tells her to prove it. So, they decide to spy on the famous porn star.

As the episode continues, Angel exhibits the three criteria to Charlie’s delight. But when she states the fact to the other angels, they begin to act sketchy. Seraphim angel Emily (Shoba Narayan) asks her older colleague Sera (Patina Miller), “Why isn’t he here?”

“Wait, none of you know what gets a soul into Heaven?” Charlie asks.

The scene then transitions into a fiery song called “You Didn’t Know,” which beings with Emily telling Sera, “But she was right, Sera / She showed us a soul can improve / He saw the light, Sera/ Checked all the boxes that you said would / Prove a person deserves a second chance.”

As the musical number continues, Sera tells Emily that the situation isn’t as simple as it seems, and Charlie joins in, “It’s not fair, Sera / Don’t you care, Sera?”

Upset with the turn of events, Adam makes a scene and tells Charlie, “A man only lives once / we’ll see you in one month / Gotta say, I can’t wait to / Come down and exterminate you!” Sera tries to stop Adam during his rant, but the angel is too cocky. Emily reacts in shock, “What are you saying? / Let me get this straight / You go down there and kill those poor souls?”

Charlie and Emily come to the terms that “if Hell is forever, then Heaven must be a lie,” and point out that the rules are “shades of gray” and that the angels are hypocrites for enjoying watching the sinners suffer repeatedly.

Adam uses this moment to reveal to Charlie that Vaggie used to be an angel.

Sera chimes in,”I’m sorry, but the court finds there’s no evidence that souls in Hell can be redeemed,” to which Adam gloats, “You better save the date, cunts, because we’re coming to your hotel first!” Sera chastises Adam as Charlie and Vaggie are sucked into a portal to return them to Hell. Before the two disappear, Emily calls out, “Don’t give up on this! I’ll figure something out, I promise!” Sera warns Emily to back off to avoid her role in Heaven being threatened. “Please, if you start to question… you could end up like Lucifer.”

Now as someone who hates cliffhangers with a deep passion, the end of this episode should’ve had me fuming, but instead, I was left slowly clapping at my television screen. Who saw any of that coming? Certainly not me. The final act of the episode was blow after blow, accompanied by an epic climatic song.

Though, I must admit, I don’t see how the first season is going to wrap in a satisfying manner with only two 23-minute episodes left. If Hell is forever, Hazbin Hotel should be, too.
