Last night on HBO‘s Real Time with Bill Maher, the host welcomed Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Seth MacFarlane to a panel discussion that included topics such as Donald Trump and the Barbie Oscars snubs.

During the discussion, Maher mentioned how Trump is running his 2024 campaign on an immigration platform, despite failing to build a wall when he was in office. He’s also squashing a bipartisan border deal because he wants to tackle immigration himself if reelected.

“It’s amazing that he wants it as an issue because he’s the one who said, ‘I’ll build the wall’ and then didn’t,” Maher said. “And now he’s running on, ‘I’m going to do what I didn’t do before.'”

Maher added, “That’s a politician.”

Schiff interjected, saying “That’s not a politician – that’s a grifter in Donald Trump.” He also called the ex-president’s promise to have Mexico pay for the border wall “an absurd promise.”

Later during his “New Rule” segment, Maher compared Trump’s 2020 election loss to Bolsonaro’s in Brazil but with one main difference: only one has been banned from ever running again. You can watch that clip below.

As for the Barbie Oscars snubs, Maher noted that the hit 2023 film scored eight nominations, including best picture, however many have been perplexed as to why Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig didn’t score noms for best leading actress and best director, respectively.

“The matter has been handed over to the International Criminal Court and is being investigated for a war,” joked the HBO host.

“I don’t know why this is such a giant controversy now,” he said. “I mean, best actress. That’s the category, you know, she [Robbie] lost to other actresses. It’s not like they gave her slot to Vin Diesel. Is this really the patriarchy?”

Ultimately Maher doesn’t think Ryan Gosling being nominated but Gerwig and Robbie not means that America is a patriarchy.

“I googled what the Mattel board really was. In the movie it’s 12 men, in real life it’s seven men and five women, so they were caught lying in their own movie,” he said. “I remember I saw it [the movie] in the theater and I liked it, it’s entertaining, but at one point, the Barbies have to like, win back the Kens and they do it by acting helpless. And the woman I was with said, ‘I don’t know any woman today who would do that.’”
