Actor Oliver Jackson-Cohen found fame on Mike Flanagan’s hit Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor. But the actor recently commented on how short-lived such fame can feel when hitting it big in the streaming era.

In an interview with The Independent, Jackson-Cohen opened up about being “Netflix famous.”

“[Being] Netflix famous…It’s quite an interesting thing,” he said.

Jackson-Cohen explained, “You’re the most famous person in the world for a while and then the next show comes along and that completely takes over.”

The actor seemed well aware of how fleeting celebrity can be in today’s streaming age, when the next Netflix hit series always feels like it’s already on the horizon. And that feeling must be exacerbated considering the streaming platform only recently began sharing viewership numbers following the Hollywood strikes, after many years of leaving the industry in the dark on how successful their television shows and movies are.

Though Jackson-Cohen found fame as a breakout star of Flanagan’s Netflix series, the actor has moved on to building a career in film. After starring in Bly Manor in 2020, he starred in Elisabeth Moss‘s The Invisible Man and later played Dakota Johnson‘s toxic partner in The Lost Daughter in 2021.

The actor acknowledged that through such projects, he has become known for playing bad men.

“I’ve played quite a lot of toxic men. But I’ve become fascinated with the question of, ‘How do we humanize these morally corrupt characters?’ There’s a challenge in that, which I think is quite fun,” he said. “But, like anything, you go through periods where you like to play a certain thing and then it’s time to move on.”

He later added, “I think I’ve played my fair share now.”

Jackson-Cohen can be seen in the recently released Jackdaw, where he stars opposite Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman.
