Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb recently enjoyed another round of their favorite segment on Today: Hoda & Jenna’s Social Dilemmas. In this segment, a viewer wrote in to ask for advice regarding dating a friend’s ex-partner.

“My friend broke up with someone four years ago – four years ago! – and is now happily engaged,” Bush Hager began reading, until Kotb cut in and told her co-host to stop adding “extra emphasis.”

Bush Hager continued, “I recently ran into her ex and he asked me out for a drink. We have a lot in common, is it wrong to go?”

She wasted no time at all as she declared: “No, it’s not. I’ll tell you why: You have one shot at this life. If that ex at the bar may be the love of your life, you’re going to create a lovely life together, you need to call your friend.”

“‘Love of your life’?” Kotb echoed. “That’s a leap.”

But Bush Hager didn’t seem to think so! “Well, I’m sorry, they’ve been broken up for four years, and she is engaged. You call up your friend,” she said.

Though Kotb initially appeared to be on the fence on whether it was okay to date a friend’s ex-partner, she agreed that the letter writer should at least give their friend a call.

“You say to your friend, ‘I want to ask, and I want to make sure you’re cool with this,'” she instructed. “Because if your friend says they’re uncomfortable you just learned a lot about your friendship.”

Bush Hager eventually came around to agreeing with her co-host. “I agree with you and I think in high school that kind of thing applies, like girl code, but she’s getting married…,” she said.

“No, but you ask her!” Kotb replied. “I think that’s good manners. And she’ll say yes, and if she doesn’t… you don’t like your friend anymore.”

Bush Hager later admitted that it was a “very complicated” situation.

Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
