Buckle up, Hijack fans! Idris Elba is officially returning for Season 2 of Apple TV+‘s high-octane thriller. But will his character Sam Nelson take to the skies again to stop another plane hijacking? We’ll have to wait and see…

On Wednesday, January 31, Apple TV+ announced the renewal of its suspenseful, thrilling seven-episode series, which premiered in 2022. Hijack followed Sam Nelson (Elba) and fellow passengers of hijacked Flight KA29 as they navigated their perilous reality in real time. During their seven-hour flight from Dubai to London, on-the-ground officials scrambled to avoid international tragedy while twist after twist — both on and off the plane — kept everyone on their toes.

Nelson was an expert negotiator who used his powers of persuasion and gift of gab to maneuver the dangerous situation. So while the Hijack team might not want to put Elba back on a plane for Season 2, Nelson’s skills are sure to translate well and aide in numerous other high-stakes scenarios.

“I was floored by the overwhelming audience response after season one. It’s top secret what new situation unfolds for Sam Nelson but I can assure you we will bring the high octane back!,” said executive producer and star Idris Elba said in a press release.

In an interview with Hijack co-creators George Kay and Jim Field Smith back in August 2023, the two talked a bit about Season 2 potential, with Field Smith saying, “There’s lots of stuff that — for as much as the series tries to answer its own questions that it sets up within itself as a limited series — I think there’s room for that character, you know, for sure ongoing. And there are things that are unanswered from Season 1.”

Kay joked, “Whatever happens, [Sam] needs a break.” And Field Smith added, “If there was a Season 2, I don’t think it’ll start one second after the end of Season 1.”

Jay Hunt, Apple TV+’s creative director for Europe, also provided a statement for the renewal announcement, saying, “Global audiences were on tenterhooks watching Idris’ riveting performance in ‘Hijack,’ and we’re thrilled to be working again with 60Forty and Idiotlamp on an equally compelling Season 2.”

As noted in a previous piece, whether we see Sam assisting with more plane situations or he’s called in to negotiate on the ground, with his people skills and Daniel’s (Max Beesley) connections, the Hijack potential feels endless. However, those men are also in love with the same woman, so those relationships would likely need to be explored in a potential Season 2. And hopefully, we’d finally get to see Sam and Kai share the screen, among other things.
