Despite the heated discourse surrounding Barbie being snubbed in certain categories at this year’s Academy Awards, actress and executive producer Margot Robbie said she is not upset about not receiving a Best Actress nod as people expected.

Robbie weighed in on the cultural impact of the film and the eight nominations it did receive during a recent appearance at a screening in Los Angeles. Per Deadline, the actress said, “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed.”

Though Robbie did not receive a nomination for Best Actress, she was nominated as an executive producer in the Best Picture category. Barbie director Greta Gerwig was similarly snubbed in the Best Director category, a fact that Robbie lamented during her talk.

“Obviously I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is,” Robbie said. “But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”

She later added that she is “beyond ecstatic that we’ve got eight Academy Award nominations, it’s so wild.”

The actress went on to praise the film’s cultural impact, which went much further than the $1.4 billion box office it netted in 2023.

“We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact,” Robbie said. “And it’s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

The actress added that seeing everyone’s reactions to the film is “the biggest reward of this entire experience.” According to her, the film’s reception is unlike anything she’s seen before in her career.

“I’ve never been a part of something like this. Not like this. I’ve done comic book stuff and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different,” she said. “It still feels very different. And I can’t think of a time when a movie’s had this effect on culture. And it’s amazing to be in the eye of the storm.”

Barbie is currently up for eight Oscars this year. Aside from the coveted Best Picture nomination, America Ferrera also received the first nomination of her career for Supporting Actress, while Ryan Gosling received a nod for Supporting Actor.

The film has also been nominated for Best Costume Design, Production Design, Adapted Screenplay, and Original Song.

Barbie is now streaming on Max.
