When strangers and high-risk spies John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine) were thrown into a Manhattan brownstone and an arranged marriage together, it was clear that Prime Video‘s original series Mr. & Mrs. Smith was taking a significant detour from the 2005 film of the same name.

Showrunners Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane created a wild eight-episode ride brimming with intimate conversations, romance, complex emotions, humor, action, danger, and life-or-death missions. And when the end credits roll on the Season 1 finale, “A Breakup,” you’ll find yourself screaming, laughing, and craving more Smith shenanigans. But is this the end of John and Jane’s story? Or is there hope for a second installment?

Curious if Prime Video renewed Mr. & Mrs. Smith for a Season 2? And if John and Jane are even alive after that intense finale?

Here’s everything we know about the future of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Will There Be A Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 On Prime Video?

As of Mr. & Mrs. Smith‘s February 2 premiere day, Prime Video had yet to renew the series for Season 2. Decider reached out to reps to inquire about a potential Season 2 and we’ll update this post when we hear back. But based on how you decipher Season 1’s open-ended ending, you may not even see a need for Season 2.

If you think that intense finale shooting scene was meant to suggest our favorite John and Jane are dead, what would Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 be without the titular couple, played by Glover and Erskine? But if you think Jane and John are still alive, then sure! There’s much more to explore in John and Jane’s world, and we’d welcome a continuation — and it seems the showrunners are up for more as well.

“I think that there’s definitely a lot more story to tell here,” co-showrunner Francesca Sloane told Entertainment Weekly. “And I think that we definitely feel like this is a fully satisfied story if it were to just live on its own. But it definitely has more legs to keep going, that’s for sure.”

“The entire season is attempting to subvert the genre while still being really satisfying to people who love the movie, and I think that people who love the movie will be incredibly pleased with the way that our finale wraps up,” Sloane continued. “I feel like we’ve really earned the finale in terms of its gloriousness, but I also feel like people who have never even heard of the original IP of Mr. & Mrs. Smith will watch that and feel like it is a well-rounded, exciting, shoot-’em-up romance with a really interesting ending. And I think that the ending is something that will have a lot of people talking.”

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Ending Explained: Are John And Jane Alive Or Dead?

If you’re looking for a detailed breakdown of Episode 8, “A Breakup,” Decider’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith finale recap has you covered. For the purposes of this post, however, we’re going to dissect the season’s intense final moments. After beating the crap out of each other, tripping on truth serum, and revealing that they didn’t try to kill each other earlier in the day, John and Jane learn who was trying to take them out all along: The other John (Wagner Moura) and Jane (Parker Posey), whose “super high-risk” jobs are actually to “finalize Smiths,” aka kill all the Smith couples who decide they want out of the spy life.

Any hope for our Smiths looks lost, until John #2 sneezes — because if there’s one thing we know about that man, it’s that he sneezes in threes! Jane takes advantage of his allergy attack, shoots him in the eye, and makes a run for it with her John. As Jane #2 fires back, the couple races to their panic room, only to realize they have a single bullet left once inside. Oh, and John was badly shot!

As Jane’s processing the situation and frantically searching for a plan, she takes a moment to ask John his thoughts, which means a lot to him in the dire moment. Jane tries to keep him awake by sharing her real name and promising they can have a kid together, but when it’s clear he’s fading fast, she decides to open the panic room door and go up against Jane #2 with her single bullet. Rather than giving viewers a front-row seat to the showdown, Mr. & Mrs. Smith takes us outside the apartment, where we see the flash of one…then two…then three (!!!) shots fired upstairs. Since we know Jane only had one bullet in her gun, it’s heavily implied that she shot at Jane #2, then Jane #2 shot back twice — perhaps once at her and once at John — suggesting our favorite Smiths are done for. But is there a chance that the couple we grew to know and love throughout these eight episodes make it out alive? Perhaps…

The thought of Jane and Jack being “finalized” by these bozos (especially after they realized their feelings for each other) is gut-wrenching, but before we have too much time to reflect on the big showdown, the sun is shining and Hot Neighbor is knocking on the Smiths’ door to deliver a book! Can you guess which one? He lets himself into the open apartment, finds the place absolutely trashed, and shouts, “I’ll just leave it here! OK! Bye!” As he walks down the sidewalk, he calls a fellow real estate agent and giddily says, “Buddy! I think they might be ready to sell! We’re gonna sell the shit out of this Moby D!” If we don’t get a Season 2 and John and Jane are, indeed, dead…at least we got a perfect final scene!

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is now streaming on Prime Video for all your rewatch needs. And don’t forget to stream the film 2005 film of the same name if you’re craving more spy marriages.
