Lover, Stalker, Killer on Netflix, a new true crime documentary that began streaming today, isn’t what I’d call a romantic Valentine’s Day movie. It’s more like an M. Night Shyamalan movie because this murder case comes with a big twist.

You’ll likely see that twist coming, even though director Sam Hobkinson (Fear City: New York vs The Mafia) leads audiences down a false path for the first half of the film. (This is a frustrating trend of Netflix true crime documentaries as of late.) The movie recounts the story of a stalking and murder case that played out in Omaha, Nebraska over a decade ago. In November 2012, Dave Kroupa began getting threatening text messages from a woman named Cari Farver, whom he’d been dating for two weeks. These messages quickly escalated from harassment to full-on stalking, and continued for years.

But though the messages from Cari kept coming, none of her friends or family had seen her in years. Her mother had reported her missing, but because her daughter was diagnosed as bipolar, the police didn’t take the case seriously, she told ABC News. As you’ll come to find out, it wasn’t Cari Farver sending those messages, but another woman, Liz Golyar.

Liz and Dave were also dating—not exclusively, he says—and she murdered Cari Farver in a jealous rage. She then began impersonating Cari in order to cover her tracks. She sent threatening messages to Dave, his other ex, and, most importantly, herself. Eventually, she even burned down her own house and shot herself in the leg. It’s all very reminiscent of Regina George calling herself a “fugly slut” in Mean Girls.

Authorities finally uncovered the truth in 2017, after two detectives, Ryan Avis and Jim Doty, took an interest in the case in 2015. Though Cari Farver’s body was never recovered, police found enough evidence to prove in court that Liz Golyar had murdered her.

Where is Liz from the Lover, Stalker, Killer Netflix documentary now?

Liz Golyar is currently serving a life prison sentence at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women, where she has been since 2017. Her real name is technically Shanna Golyar, and you can view her Nebraska inmate file here. Golyar was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2017, as well as arson, and sentenced to life in prison, with no chance of parole. Golyar is 49 years old.

According to a 2020 news report by ABC, Golyar still maintains her innocence. Author Leslie Rule, who wrote about Golyar’s case in 2020 book A Tangled Web, corresponded with Golyar, and has letters from the convicted murderer in which Golyar claims “the real killer is still out there” and that “I will not stop fighting until I am set free.”

In that same interview with ABC, Farver’s mother Nancy Raney said she wanted her daughter to be remembered as “as the fun-loving, talented, smart woman that she was.”

“Cari was only 37 when she died,” Raney said. “If I could talk to CarI right now, I’d say ‘I love you. I’m so glad that you are in my life. You have a beautiful son who’s got a wonderful life coming, and I miss you terribly.'”
