As Jon Stewart prepares to (temporarily) return to the hosting desk at The Daily Show on Monday nights, he’s opening up about why he’s returning to the show where he spent 16 years, and why his Apple TV+ series The Problem With Jon Stewart ended after just two seasons.

The Problem With Jon Stewart first premiered in September 2021 and ran for two seasons, with its final episode airing in April 2023. In late 2023, the New York Times suggested that Stewart’s split with Apple was the results of “creative differences” that involved Apple’s concerns over the show’s potential coverage of topics including China and artificial intelligence.

During an interview today on CBS Mornings, anchor Gayle King welcomed Stewart back to the Paramount Global family, which owns both CBS and Comedy Central, and asked him why he chose to return to The Daily Show after nine years away.

He took that as an opportunity to take a clear shot at his former employer, Apple.

“I very much wanted to have some place to unload thoughts as we get into this election season, and I thought I was going to do it over at, they call it Apple TV+. It’s a television enclave, very small. It’s like living in Malibu. But they decided that they felt that they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble,” Stewart said.

While his presence on Apple TV+ was short-lived, the fact that he’s only returning to Comedy Central one night a week has many fans wishing for more. When King asked why he’s only back once a week, he responded, “I just felt like just doing Mondays.”

The Daily Show airs on weeknights at 11/10c on Comedy Central. Here’s how to watch Jon Stewart’s return to The Daily Show tonight.
