The boys of summer 2024 are without a doubt Deadpool and Wolverine. The mercenary and the mutant are teaming up for a Marvel-ous romp through the multiverse — and superhero movies will never be the same. Deadpool vs. Wolverine is more than just a team-up between Ryan Reynolds’ wisecracking antihero and Hugh Jackman’s legendary warrior. It’s likely the movie event of the decade — and that’s why you’re here, right now, reading this.

So, what is the deal with Deadpool & Wolverine? And does this mean that Deadpool is really joining the MCU? What is going on?! When it comes to Deadpool, though, you confusion is a feature and not a bug. Ol’ DP intends to keep you guessing, and I’m sure there are a lot of secrets still being kept about this movie. Who is in the Deadpool & Wolverine cast?

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprise their roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively. Returning from previous Deadpool films are Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Karan Soni (Dopinder), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Stefan Kapičić (Colossus), Rob Delaney (Peter), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio), Lewis Tan (Shatterstar), and Randal Reeder (Buck)

New additions to the franchise include Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) as Paradox, a leading agent of the Time Variance Authority, as well as Emma Corrin (The Crown) as Cassandra Nova, Professor Xavier’s… uh… let’s go with “evil twin sister” but trust me, it’s way more complicated than that in the comics.

A number of actors are expected to reprise their roles from previous Fox Marvel films, like Aaron Stanford (Pyro) and Jennifer Garner (Elektra). Additionally, Sabretooth, Toad, Lady Deathstrike, and Azazel will pop up in the movie, likely played by new actors.

Who is writing and directing Deadpool & Wolverine?

Deadpool and Wolverine comes from director Shawn Levy, who previously directed the Ryan Reynolds video game-inspired film Free Guy as well as episodes of Stranger Things and the World War II drama All the Light We Cannot See.

A first draft of the film was written by Bob’s Burgers‘ Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin. Then Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of the first two Deadpool films, signed on to work on the script — possibly a brand new draft. Later, Zeb Wells (SuperMansion) signed on as a writer. Ultimately, Reese, Wernick, Wells, Ryan Reynolds, and Shawn Levy received writing credit.

Where was Deadpool & Wolverine filmed?

Filming on Deadpool and Wolverine began in May 2023, with London’s Pinewood Studios serving as the film’s primary home. Other scenes were shot at Bovingdon Film Studios, and on location filming took place in London and Norfolk.

I know that one’s a bit of an anti-Easter egg, but it needed to be said. Marvel Studios is not going to introduce the character who could become the franchise’s greatest villain in a millisecond of a Deadpool trailer!

And a fun li’l Easter egg from the most recent official trailer (which should be autoplaying above) — y’all caught the “Liefeld’s Just Feet” sign in the slo-mo heroic walking shot, right?

That’s a reference to Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld and his very well-documented love of not drawing feet.

What is Deadpool & Wolverine about?

You know Marvel — they’re gonna keep a storyline secret for as long as possible. But just going off of the trailer, it looks like Deadpool and Wolverine is going to turn the IRL saga of Disney acquiring Fox — and therefore the merc with a mouth’s movie rights — into a literal, fictional merging of universes. Fortunately Marvel Studios introduced a concept and organization that’s primed to deal with alternate realities and the pruning/merging thereof: the TVA (Time Variance Authority) as seen in Loki Seasons 1-2. That’s the biggest Easter egg in the entire trailer, considering that it completely ties Deadpool to the MCU — and gives us some much-needed cohesion between the Marvel Studios shows and movies.

So, how will this R-rated, fourth-wall-breaking, Bugs Bunny with a bloodlust fit into the comparatively lucid MCU? We’ll have to wait and see!
