President Joe Biden‘s pet is in the news yet again after records revealed the POTUS’s German shepherd was involved in 24 biting incidents with the Secret Service before he was taken away from the White House in October 2023. On this morning’s episode of The View, the panel reacted to documents that detailed the extent of Commander’s biting problem, and while the co-hosts were largely defensive, there was one exception: Alyssa Farah Griffin.

While discussing the 400 pages of documents revealing injuries caused by Commander, Griffin said that she thought the Bidens should have done something about the dog sooner. Commander, who joined the family as a puppy in December 2021, lived at the White House until he was re-homed last fall. Before he left, he bit agents at least 24 times.

“The White House is a uniquely stressful environment for a dog,” Griffin said on today’s episode. “There’s working dogs all over — also mostly the same breed, German shepherds — even in the residence, there’s Secret Service and there’s staff.”

She continued, “I grew up with a German shepherd. I think they are one of the best, most loyal dogs, but they’re protectors by nature. So they did the right thing by re-homing him with somebody in the family. It should have happened a little sooner. Twenty-four bites is actually a lot, and some were bad.”

Whoopi Goldberg then asked The View crew to pull up another photo of Commander, adding, “All you’ve got to do is look at him!” Imagining what could be going through the dog’s mind, she said, “‘That’s right, I’m walking, I’m walking here! Woof woof! Imma bite your ass!'”

Sunny Hostin was right there with her, chiming in to tell the panel, “Listen to his name! Commander, he’s in charge, he’s a guard dog.”

She then added, “Some things, when it comes to dogs, it’s just innate.”

Goldberg continued to defend Biden as she told her co-hosts, “Here’s the truth: If I was President Biden and I’m in the world that we’re in, I’d have a dog that wasn’t playing, too! I’m sorry!”

Her comments come not long after Goldberg last discussed Commander on The View during a July 2023 episode. While chatting with her co-hosts about an earlier report detailing Commander’s biting issue, Goldberg couldn’t stop laughing, but managed to get out one line as she proclaimed, “It is not easy when you have a chomper, somebody who just, you’re walking by and they’re like, ‘Mmm… let me get a little taste of this!’”

She added, “He hasn’t bitten any Republicans, so I think y’all should be really glad.”

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
