Wendy Williams has been diagnosed with dementia and aphasia, according to a statement shared by her care team.

A press release from Williams’ team published Feb. 22 reveals that the former talk show host was diagnosed in 2023 with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), the same condition Bruce Willis was diagnosed with last year. The release states that both conditions “have already presented significant hurdles in Wendy’s life.”

The press release also gives a major update on her current status as she receives medical care.

“Wendy is still able to do many things for herself. Most importantly she maintains her trademark sense of humor,” the release states. It later mentions that Williams is “appreciative of the many kind thoughts and good wishes being sent her way.”

Williams’ care team said they shared the press release “to correct inaccurate and hurtful rumors about her health” after rumors began circulating surrounding her sudden exit from the spotlight.

The update also comes just days before the tell-all documentary Where is Wendy Williams? premieres on Lifetime on Saturday (Feb. 24).

The documentary began filming in 2022 to chronicle a new venture in Williams’ career, but it pivoted as her health began to impact her daily life.

By that point, she was openly struggling with alcoholism, lymphedema, and Grave’s disease, and had already shown signs of memory loss according to those close to her, per People.

A new report from the outlet alleges that Williams’ family lost contact with her when she was put into a care facility to deal with “cognitive issues” by her court-appointed guardian.

The guardian is the only person who can contact and visit Williams. Her family reportedly does not know where she is and cannot contact her, but she can contact them.

When reached for comment by Decider, a rep for Williams did not reply by time of publication.

Where Is Wendy Williams? premieres on Lifetime Feb. 24 and 25.
