Here’s What Hollywood Got Wrong About These New York City Based Rom-Coms

“It’s a New York movie, you gotta shoot the exteriors in New York!” Wise words from proud New York native and comedian Sebastian Conelli, who is pointing out some of the inaccuracies — or downright lies!— from some of your favorite New York-based romantic comedies in his new video series, “That Ain’t NY!”.

Take Jennifer Garner’s 13 Going on 30, for example. Conelli points out how Garner’s character is somehow able to afford a luxurious, spacious West Village apartment as a 30-year-old magazine editor. Yeah right.

Conelli also confirmed the facts as he watched clips from The Incredible Jessica James, remarking how “New York men are sick in the head,” as he cringes at Jessica Williams’ character asking a man on the subway to move over for her, which he did not. Conelli goes on to fact-check the subway line Jessica is supposedly taking from Bushwick, which apparently is not in fact the Q.

Though Conelli had a lot of criticisms of these films, he did applaud When Harry Met Sally for its accuracy as Sally fakes an orgasm in Katz’s Deli and no one does anything about it. “This is real New York, we don’t get embarrassed to do stuff like that in person!” Conelli remarks. He adds that New Yorkers move on with their lives because they know they’ll see something even more interesting a minute later.

Hopefully Conelli didn’t ruin your favorite New York-based rom-com, and if he did, maybe you learned some valuable lessons about the realities of living in the city.
