Will There Be A ‘The Tourist’ Season 3? Jamie Dornan Isn’t Sure: “I’m Pretty Busy Until The End of 2025”

The Tourist has been taking Netflix by storm! The hit BBC show starring Jamie Dornan found a new home on the streaming giant after being removed from Max during production for the second season. Now, Season 2 has been released in the United States, nearly two months since it premiered in the United Kingdom.

Created by Fleabag producers Harry and Jack Williams, the show follows a car crash victim (Dornan) who wakes up in a hospital with amnesia and goes on a journey to figure out his past after suspecting that dangerous people are trying to kill him.

At the end of the first season, the man discovers that his name is Elliot and he has connections to a drug trafficking ring.

The series also stars Danielle Macdonald as Helen, a police officer who greets Elliot in the hospital and later becomes embroiled in his twisted journey. The two develop a close friendship that takes a romantic turn.

The Tourist premiered Jan. 1, 2022 on BBC in the UK and aired months later on Max in the United States. In December 2023, Deadline reported that Max removed the show from the platform and Netflix was picking it up. Netflix re-released Season 1 in the U.S. on Feb. 1, 2024 and Season 2 on Feb. 29, 2024. The show has become a major hit for the platform. As of now, Season 1 has spent four weeks on the streamer’s Global Top 10 TV chart.

Jamie Dornan on ‘The Tourist’ Season 3

Decider sat down to chat with Dornan in the New York City Netflix office ahead of the US release of The Tourist Season 2. During our conversation, Dornan shared that the show was originally only meant to be one season, however, the Williams brothers slipped him a script for the first episode of Season 2 while they were meeting for a meal, and he loved it.

“I read the first script and I was like, ‘Oh, right. I’m on board.’ I said ‘yes’ after reading that script,” Dornan told Decider.

But, what’s the likelihood of that happening again for a third season?

“I don’t know if there’s been conversations had about that,” Dornan said. “We’re staying out of all that and seeing if it happens. I don’t think it’ll happen. I think I know I’m pretty busy now until the end of 2025, so it’ll be a while.”

Given that the spirits are high between Dornan, the writers, and Netflix, never say never. But for now, it seems that those involved with the show are satisfied with the two seasons.

Speaking of Dornan’s busy schedule, the Irish actor gave Decider insight on the projects he has in the works. He newly joined The Tourist as an executive producer for Season 2, and teases that he has committed himself to additional producing projects. “If you’re the lead in something and you’ve got a certain standing in the industry, you end up being an executive producer. Some are more active than others in terms of what they actually contribute, I probably fell somewhere in the middle,” Dornan said about his experience being a producer for Season 2. “For the next couple of things I’m doing, I’m in that role again. I’m not allowed to talk about it, but I start filming really soon and I’m definitely more active than I was in the second season of The Tourist.”

Dornan also teased the continuation of his relationship with Netflix, saying, “There’s a couple of things that are maybe in my future that are Netflixy.”

Will There Be A The Tourist Season 3?

With all the information we shared above, we’re confident in saying that the people involved with creating The Tourist are letting the show evolve naturally, and thus far, there have been no extensive conversations about returning for a third season.

Though, as Dornan shared on The Graham Norton Show in January 2023, with as much fan interest as the show has been generating, the possibilities are endless. “There wasn’t meant to be [a Season 2], but then that many people watch something and you know how the world works,” the actor said at the time. “If there’s an appetite for it, and Jack and Harry Williams, who created the show, are very smart fellas, and they’ve worked out a way of continuing the story.”
