FX’s intense new drama Shōgun has been dominating Hulu‘s homepage for the last week, and with good reason. The new adaptation of James Clavell’s beloved 1975 novel is an absolute banger, full of thrilling moments, exquisite cinematography, and an idiosyncratic “hero” in Cosmo Jarvis‘s John Blackthorne. The first two episodes of Shōgun premiered last week, but when do new episodes premiere? How long will fans have to wait for the next episode of Shōgun?

Shōgun takes place in 1600 Japan. For decades, the Catholic Portuguese have controlled the secret to sailing to the wealthy island nation. However, one intrepid Protestant navigator — the aforementioned Englishman John Blackthorne — manages to pilot the Dutch ship Erasmus to Japan’s shores. Blackthorne’s arrival coincides with the nation’s regents turning on the cunning warlord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada). The wily Toranaga seeks out Blackthorne and his knowledge of the outside world to gain an advantage on his enemies. Blackthorne, in turn, is paired with the brilliant and beautiful Mariko (Anna Sawai), who is his translator in this strange and dangerous land.

Shōgun fully immerses modern audiences in the labyrinthine politics of 1600 Japan while also serving up some intense drama. In just the first two episodes, we see a poor man boiled to death, a man beheaded by a samurai, an assassination attempt, a tragic bit of seppuku, and a brilliant courtesan pleasing a lord by cuckolding him. Needless to say, you probably can’t wait to see where Shōgun takes us next.
