The 2024 Oscars are finally upon us — and Drew Barrymore is weighing in on one of this year’s biggest snubs. Like the rest of us, the actress-turned-talk show host believed Greta Gerwig getting left out of the Best Director category for her work on Barbie was a big mistake.

During today’s Oscars-themed episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore welcomed Entertainment Tonight co-hosts Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner to help break down Hollywood’s biggest night. But before they got too deep into their conversation, Frazier ripped into the Academy’s “ridiculous” decision to exclude Gerwig from the Best Director category.

“The world that Greta Gerwig created was such an amazing fantasy world,” he said. “You didn’t have to love the movie to look at it and say, ‘Wow. That is different the way you did it.'”

Frazier continued, “So to have a director like that left out of this category is mind-boggling to me because you just have to look at what she did, what she created, what she directed and what she did for movie-making. And you can’t leave her out. That’s ridiculous.”

Barrymore then offered her take on the controversial snub. While she didn’t want to get too into it, she ended up saying what we were all thinking anyway.

“I won’t say too much about the Greta Gerwig but I don’t understand why she’s not in there,” she said. “It is the movie brought to life and now we feel odd about the whole thing when we should’ve felt great about the whole thing. I don’t like it. I don’t like it all.”

Ross Mathews agreed with the duo, adding, “You know what the weirdest thing is? It wasn’t even that shocking because it has just happened over and over and over again and that’s the whole point of the movie.”

Barrymore continued to praise Gerwig and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto for their work on Barbie. Since the movie raked in almost $2 billion at the box office, it was that much more surprising to Barrymore that Gerwig wasn’t recognized in her category.

“How did this happen?” the star asked in frustration. “OK. See, I said it. I went there.”
