Damsel, the new fantasy movie now streaming on Netflix, not only finally gives Millie Bobby Brown a sword, it also gives her a fire-breathing dragon to slay with said sword. Let’s go El!

Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and written by Dan Mazeau, Damsel stars Brown as Elodie, the princess of an impoverished kingdom who agrees to marry another land’s prince (played by Love, Simon star Nick Robinson) in exchange for money for her people. Elodie resigns herself to a loveless marriage, but she certainly doesn’t expect her new groom to unceremoniously toss her into a cavern on her wedding day. It turns out, Elodie is nothing more than a sacrifice for a vengeful, talking dragon. Now, she must use her wits—and her surprisingly utilitarian wedding dress—to survive.

Did I mention that the dragon talks? You can by her voice that this is one wise, powerful, and pissed-off beast. She’s giving Mother, and I don’t just mean that in the sense that this dragon is a literal mother seeking to avenge her babies. So who is the voice actor that plays the dragon in Damsel?

Who voices the dragon in Damsel?

The dragon in Damsel is voiced by Oscar-nominated actress Shohreh Aghdashloo. The 71-year-old Iranian actor has had a long career, though modern audiences may know her best as Chrisjen Avasarala on the sci-fi series The Expanse, or as Dina Araz in the fourth season of 24.

In the early 2000s, she nabbed an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 2003 film adaptation of House of Sand and Fog. More recently, Aghdashloo has been taking on more voice roles, including the voice of Gozer the Gozerian in 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and a small voice part in the animated series Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight.

Now, in Damsel, Aghdashloo once again flexes her voice-acting talents, this time as a fearsome dragon. She’s on fire. (Get it? Because dragons breathe fire? Nevermind.)
