Legendary manga artist Akira Toriyama, who is best known for writing and illustrating the popular Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump series, has died at the age of 68.

According to a press release from the creator’s Bird Studio and shared via the official Dragon Ball social media accounts (see below), Toriyama died on March 1 from an acute subdural hematoma.

“He has left many manga titles and works of art to this world. Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years,” reads the announcement. “We hope that the world of Akira Toriyama’s unique works will continue to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.”

The statement mentions that his funeral has already taken place with just family and relatives attending. It sadly adds that Toriyama had several projects in the works as well as “many more things to achieve.”

Toriyama was born on April 5, 1955 in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan. He had several failed pitches and stories in his early twenties but finally hit it big in 1980 when his Dr. Slump manga concept was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump until 1984.

The artist’s Dragon Ball manga series was later serialized in 1984 for Weekly Shōnen Jump before becoming a successful television and movie franchise.

In addition to its success as an anime franchise, Dragon Ball expanded into the video game and retail world, with characters such as Goku, Bulma, Piccolo, and Krillin, all becoming household names.
