Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse lost the Oscar for best animated feature this weekend to Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. In response, Spider-Man star Shameik Moore took to X to react to the news with a single word: “Robbed.”

The voice actor swiftly followed up with another post after facing backlash from fans.

“Respect to the winner,” Moore wrote. “It’s true, I’m definitely a sore loser, but we didn’t lose, Spider-Verse has impacted A LOT of lives. We may not have been acknowledged tonight but life goes on.”

He then teased the upcoming, and final, installment of the Spider-Verse franchise he leads, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is set for a 2025 premiere. “BEYOND….. yea get ready,” he wrote.

Moore later acknowledged that there were likely more graceful ways to handle the loss after a fan noted how co-writer and producer Chris Miller reacted to the loss.

“Well, if you’re gonna lose, might as well lose to the GOAT,” Miller had written.

Moore acknowledged, “Your [sic] right, honestly the whole Spider-Verse team are such good sports. Very professional and I’m excited to see what comes of this. I’m young, and a fighter, so forgive my nature. Congrats to the winners.”

Moore’s statement came after fans defended Miyazaki in the replies of his post, with some recommending that he tune into some of Miyazaki’s work as “one of the best directors of all time.”

This marks the second Oscar win of Miyazaki’s career, after the legendary animator received an Oscar in 2001 for Spirited Away. Miyazaki was also given an Honorary Award in 2014 for his achievements in film.

Though Spider-Verse did not win last night, the first installment was recognized in the same category in 2019.

Across the Spider-Verse already won to some degree, earning $690 million worldwide after its May 2023 premiere.
