The View couldn’t resist talking about the internet’s current favorite conspiracy theory on this morning’s episode. And like the rest of us, they all had their own complex explanations for what, exactly, is going on in that now infamous Mother’s Day photo of Kate Middleton and her three children.

The co-hosts broke down the madness caused by the first image of Kate after her abdominal surgery, which was pulled by major news outlets like the Associated Press and Reuters after they accused the royal family of “manipulating” the photo.

While Kate released a statement claiming she was an “amateur photographer” who tried to “experiment with editing,” not everyone around the Hot Topics table was buying it.

Sara Haines denied that Kate even took the picture, calling out her description of herself as an “amateur photographer,” while Ana Navarro exclaimed in agreement, “That’s my thing!”

Meanwhile, Whoopi Goldberg — who had defended Kate at the start of the segment by saying, “I know very few people who don’t manipulate their own photographs” — pushed back against Haines, but she was met with her own resistance from Sunny Hostin.

“She’s the future queen, Whoopi!” Hostin countered. “She ain’t taking selfies with her family.”

But according to Goldberg, Kate’s royal status doesn’t even factor in: “She may be the future queen — she’s still an amateur photographer,” she insisted, before telling the panel, “Listen, I’m sure that none of you have ever tampered with your own [photos].”

Hostin, who got note during the broadcast that Prince William allegedly took the controversial photo, wondered, “They don’t have money for a royal photographer?” as Alyssa Farah Griffin said that Kate plain “stepped in it” with the whole mess.

“There are very genuine concerns about her wellbeing … when you put something out like this that doesn’t meet Reuters or The Associated Press editorial standards, it feeds fuel to this fire of conspiracies,” Griffin said, then suggested Kate film a quick video to halt the rumor mill.

Goldberg, quickly emerging as Kate’s No. 1 defender, vehemently disagreed with Griffin.

“She doesn’t need to do it!” she exclaimed, before recounting instances in which her own image had been manipulated for photoshoots and magazine covers. Haines insisted a family photo and a cover shoot are different, then dropped a big bombshell when she reminded the panel that Kate’s wedding band was missing from the image.

Navarro even brought an enlarged print-out of the picture to analyze, but admitted, “This is cukoo-crazy … who’s got the eyesight and time?”

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
