Don Lemon Says Elon Musk “Canceled” His X Show And Is “Mad” At Him After Their Interview Went Awry: “There’s A Whole Lot That Went Down”

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon was poised to launch his new solo venture The Don Lemon Show on X under a new partnership with Elon Musk. But Lemon is now claiming that Musk terminated their deal after the two sat down for an interview for his show’s premiere episode.

Lemon issued a statement on X today in which he claimed, “Elon Musk has canceled the partnership I had with X, which they announced as part of their public commitment to amplifying more diverse voices on their platform.”

He continued, “He informed me of his decision hours after an interview I conducted with him on Friday. That interview will remain the premiere episode of ‘The Don Lemon Show’ on Monday, March 18.”

Lemon expanded on the situation further in a video that he also shared on X.

“Elon Musk is mad at me… This does not change anything about the show except for my relationship with Elon and X, and there’s a whole lot that went down, and I’m gonna tell you about it in the coming days,” he said.

Lemon also shed some light on what happened during the interview that possibly led to the end of their partnership, saying, “Apparently, free speech absolutism doesn’t apply when it comes to questions about him from people like me.”

Lemon also shared his experience negotiating the deal — and the ill-fated interview — with Musk, which came after he was fired from CNN in April 2023.

“Elon publicly encouraged me to join X with a new show, saying I would have his ‘full support,’ and that his ‘digital town square is for all.’ He and his team pursued the deal in numerous conversations and made significant commitments about the support X would provide for the show,” Lemon said. “I took Elon and his management team’s word that they, for the first time, were interested in working directly with new and diverse voices.”

He also added that there were “no restrictions” on their interview when Musk agreed to do it.

“My questions were respectful and wide-ranging, covering everything from SpaceX to the presidential election. We had a good conversation. Clearly he felt differently,” Lemon said. “His commitment to a global town square where all questions can be asked and all ideas can be shared seems not to include questions of him from people like me.”

Despite Musk’s move, Lemon’s rep told Variety, “Don has a deal with X and he expects to be paid for it, If we have to go to court, we will.”

It appears that Lemon will be moving forward with The Don Lemon Show, which he still plans to share on X and YouTube despite the end of their partnership, which was first announced in January.

Lemon’s interview with Musk is set to air March 18 as the first episode of The Don Lemon Show. It will be available on YouTube, X and other podcast streaming services.
