‘Girls5eva’ Creator Says The Streamberry Reference in Season 3 Was Netflix’s Idea
Peacock who? The all-star musical comedy Girls5eva has found a new home on Netflix.
The series premiered in 2021 on Peacock, where it aired for two seasons. In October 2022, it was announced that Peacock had dropped the show and it would continue on Netflix. Per The Hollywood Reporter, both streamers are expected to stream the first two seasons.
However, the third season is streaming exclusively on Netflix and was added to the platform on Mar. 14, 2024, simultaneously with the previous two seasons.
Created by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alum Meredith Scardino and executive produced by Tina Fey, Girls5eva follows the titular ’90s girl group as they reunite in the present after an up-and-coming rapper samples one of their songs.
The cast includes Sara Bareilles, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell.
In an interview with Scardino, she told Decider that Netflix has been an “amazing partner.”
She said, “They were wonderfully supportive of the show from the jump… I have emails from [Vice Presidents of Original Series at Netflix] Andy [Weil] and Tracey [Pakosta] loving the show when it first came out on Peacock. They’ve always loved it. I’m so happy to work with them.”
Series star Goldberry also praised the streamer, telling us, “You know the term ‘shout’ from the Episcopal Pentecostal church? That’s what I was doing when I got the news.”
The six-episode third season sees Girls5eva embarking on a comeback tour following the release of their latest album, which features their hit single “Big Pussy Energy.”
The synopsis teases, “With no plan, tour manager, or venues secured, the ladies pile into a van and hit the great unknown, doing their damnedest to promote their album and get back on top.”

Upon the first season’s release, Decider’s Joel Keller praised the show in his review, “With four fantastic leads and some sharp writing, Girls5eva should give Fey-Carlock fans the fix they’ve been looking for since Kimmy Schmidt ended.”
In January, we proclaimed Netflix as the ultimate streamer for musical theater fans, citing the Girls5eva pick-up and the Ryan Murphy-verse, which includes the stage-to-movie adaptations of The Boys in the Band and The Prom, and we stand by it.
