New Movies on Streaming: ‘Drive-Away Dolls,’ ‘Madame Web,’ + More

Madame Web

Powered by Reelgood

Madame Web may be the most popular film of the year (to talk about, at least), and it’s one of the many new movies that’s new on VOD this week. Meanwhile, in another universe, Ethan Coen has traded in his creative partnership with brother Joel to work with his wife Tricia Cooke on the new film Drive-Away Dolls, and Ava DuVernay has turned the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents into a riveting narrative about the life of that book’s author, Isabel Wilkerson in Origin.

Among the other worthwhile films that are now on demand is Inshallah A Boy, a Jordanian film about a widow (Mouna Hawa) who fakes a pregnancy with a son so that she can protect herself and he daughter against Jordan’s patriarchal inheritance laws that would otherwise leave her with nothing. Lauded with critical praise and multiple awards at Cannes and the Venice Film Festival, the film makes its streaming debut this week.

These are just a few of the films that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now.

Madame Web

The press surrounding Sony Pictures’ Madame Web, which dropped on VOD somewhat unexpectedly today, has been just as entertaining as anything in the film, if we’re being honest. Dakota Johnson, who stars as Cassie Webb, a paramedic-turned-clairvoyant, has said “I probably will never do anything like it again,” while her co-star Sydney Sweeney simply told one reporter, “I was just hired as an actress in it.” The movie, based on the Marvel comics of the same name, stars Johnson as a woman who experiences things before they happen. She uses that power to try and save a trio of young women (played by Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor) from the villainous Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), the man who was in the Amazon with Cassie’s mom researching spiders just before she died.

Drive-Away Dolls

Drive-Away Dolls, written by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke and directed by Coen, stars Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan as Jamie and Marian, two friends who take a road trip in a car that they’re transporting to Florida. This being a Coen movie (the first that Ethan has directed without his brother Joel), of course there are hapless criminals chasing them because, as it turns out, they were given the wrong car and the one they’re driving contains some very sensitive materials. The stacked cast also includes Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo and Matt Damon.

WHERE TO WATCH DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS

Origin

Ava DuVernay’s Origin, is the story of author Isabel Wilkerson (played by Aunjanue Ellis), as she sets out to write her seminal book on race and racism in America, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. As Wilkerson experiences tragedy and trauma in her own life and amid the unrest and racial tension in America in the 2010s, the film follows her in her quest to make sense of it all. The end result, of course, was her New York Times best-seller that’s an exploration of the roots of racial and societal prejudices.
