Ah, June! The beginning of summer, when film enthusiasts spend their days and nights inside with the air conditioning, working through our world cinema watch lists.

Though it’s still a few months away, The Criterion Collection just dropped their slate of film titles being added to the collection throughout the summer month, including masterworks by David Lynch, Lana and Lilly Wachowski, and Terry Gilliam, among others.

Re-releasing with a 4K transfer, David Lynch’s 1986 neo-noir Blue Velvet will be available on June 25. The violent mystery thriller stars Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern, Isabella Rossellini in early breakout performances, and Dennis Hopper in one of his most electric, disturbing roles. Lynch received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for the film, which begins with the discovery of a human ear in a field, and unravels into a story about the seedy underbelly of small towns, a concern that Lynch has returned to in his career time and time again. Blue Velvet is now available to stream on Tubi.

Also releasing on June 25 is Barry Jenkins’ historical drama miniseries The Underground Railroad. It’s a rare move for the Criterion to put television formats in their library, which speaks volumes about the extraordinary adaptation of the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Colson Whitehead. The Underground Railroad is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

The Wachowskis’ debut 1996 film, Bound, will hit the Criterion Collection on June 18. The pulpy, stylish noir thriller was applauded at the time for its’ portrayal of lesbian relationship in its two leading characters, played by Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly. The film is an exciting precedent to the Wachowskis’ long career in Hollywood. It is streaming on Pluto TV.

Additionally joining the Collection is Terry Gilliam’s 1998 Hunter S. Thompson adaptation Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas (June 4), Emilio Fernández’ 1951 Mexican melodrama Victims of Sin (June 18) and Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s transgressive 1982 Jean Genet adaptation, Querelle (June 11).
