If HBO fans are still waiting for Euphoria Season 3, they shouldn’t hold their breath. The series is reportedly experiencing another delay just as filming was expected to begin in the coming months.

According to a recent report from Variety, the scripts for Season 3 are still being written. The show is still expected to move forward on the network, despite recent rumors that the Season 3 shoot was scrapped.

“HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement. “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”

Levinson, who created the series, has been the sole writer of the show since it premiered on HBO in 2019. Actress Hunter Schafer, who plays Jules Vaughn in the series, is the only other credited writer on the series after writing the Season 2 episode “Fuck Anyone Who’s Not A Sea Blob.”

The show helped catapult its series leads — namely Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Sydney Sweeney — to new heights, with many striking out with their own successful feature films. Allowing them to take on new opportunities leads us to believe that the show could be delayed for an indefinite amount of time, which may put its projected premiere date in 2025 at risk.

Filming for Euphoria Season 3 was reportedly expected to begin in the next few months.

Sweeney, who recently starred and produced in the new horror film Immaculate, recently hinted that filming for Season 3 was going to begin soon. “It’s a long time coming,” she said in a recent interview with MTV.

“It’s like home when I go back to it. I like it,” she said. “I’m excited. It’s like family.”

Season 3 was already heavily delayed following the 2023 joint WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The sudden death of breakout star Angus Cloud also came as a shock to the cast and fans alike.

Levinson previously gave fans a glimpse of what to expect in Season 3. Speaking to Elle, Levinson teased that Season 3 will be a “film noir” in which Zendaya’s character, Rue, will “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”

Colman Domingo, who also stars in the series, has defended Levinson’s writing process earlier this month, explaining that he is someone who “writes and rewrites and writes and rewrites again.”

“He’s responding immediately to what the ills of the world are. I know that the one thing I can tell you is that he’s very much interested in the existential question of who we are right now. Our souls. That’s what he wants to figure out with season three,” Domingo told GQ.

For now, Euphoria Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Max.
