Mel B is telling the story from A to Z. On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the iconic Spice Girls member recalled the awkward interaction she had with Prince William when he pinned her MBE badge to her breasts.

After a lengthy conversation about the abuse she allegedly faced at the hands of her ex-husband, Mel told host Drew Barrymore about her experience receiving the royal honor from Prince William back in 2022.

But, according to Mel, he was initially confused about why she was there.

“It was funny actually because Prince William was like, ‘Oh, where are the other Spice Girls?’ I was like, ‘It’s just me,'” she remembered. “He was like, ‘Who are you here with?’ — looking I guess for another brown person or Black person. I’m like, ‘I’m here with my mom. She’s the white lady in the back with blonde hair and blue eyes.'”

When she explained to him that she was being honored for her work with the domestic violence charity Women’s Aid, he was all ears.

“He’s having this whole conversation with me — and then I get even more nervous,” she said. “I’m like, ‘You’ve got a queue of people, you know, stick the badge on.'”

She continued, “And I look down — Victoria [Beckham] designed my dress and she put a slit [on the chest] — and it’s just boobs! And he’s having to pin it on there. I’m like, ‘Ah, thank you.'”

Despite the cringey moment, Mel said Prince William was “lovely,” adding that she was the “last batch of MBEs” that Queen Elizabeth II signed off on before she died in September 2022.

Elsewhere in her interview with Barrymore, Mel became choked up while talking about how she built herself back up after leaving an abusive relationship. Aside from therapy, she said, “I spent a lot of time by myself, learning to really like myself which was the hardest thing. And now I really love myself,” as she wiped tears from her eyes.

“Every medal in the world deserves to be given to you,” Barrymore concluded.
