It’s been over five years since Legally Blonde 3 was announced to be in the works, with Reese Witherspoon set to star, and the original Legally Blonde writers, Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith penning the script.

But now the writers say they aren’t sure if the movie is still happening.

“I don’t know that that’s going to happen,” McCullah told Decider in a recent interview when asked for a Legally Blonde 3 update. “But it’s a nice thought.”

Her longtime writing partner, Smith, added, “It’s kind of in Reese land. We hope it does! Bring us Elle Woods. More Elle!”

McCullah and Smith—who wrote the original script for the 2001 Legally Blonde, but did not write the 2003 sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde—had completed a script for the third movie, and in 2019, MGM even announced a Legally Blonde 3 release date: May 8, 2020.

Obviously, that didn’t happen. First, the pandemic hit in early 2020. Then it was announced in May 2020 that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were writing a new version of the script—”an entirely new fresh spin,” according to Deadline—with Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine company producing. Then, two years later, Amazon Studios acquired MGM in 2022. The last we heard, according to a 2023 Deadline report, Amazon was considering a Legally Blonde TV series, in addition to another movie.

The next move, according to McCullah and Smith, is up to Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine. The actor and producer has been busy, including starring and producing a Nicholas Stoller movie for Amazon, You’re Cordially Invited, which was filmed last year; and producing and starring in several TV shows, including the upcoming fourth season of The Morning Show for Apple.

But perhaps she could find some time to squeeze in a return to Elle Woods. What, like it’s hard?
