Apple TV+‘s beloved comedy Loot is back with a fresh batch of episodes, eventful storylines, and exciting new guest stars. Despite all the Season 2 developments, one thing remains the same: the show’s remarkable ability to nail pop culture parodies.

In Season 1 of Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard’s series, a spot-on Hot Ones parody starring host Sean Evans and Maya Rudolph as billionaire Molly Wells went viral for being downright hilarious. In addition to reminding fans of Rudolph’s iconic Saturday Night Live sketch from 2021, the scene showcased Rudolph’s unmatched physical comedy and Loot’s deep understanding of the internet. Within seconds of its Season 2 premiere, Loot flexes its crucial knowledge of celebrity culture yet again with a flawless parody of Vogue‘s popular 73 Questions series, featuring special guest star Tony Hawk.

“We are obsessed with those videos, first of all. So we would watch them in the writers’ room — all the different people doing the house tours,” Yang told Decider during a Zoom interview. “There are so many, by the way. And it’s such a weird format, where they’re talking to camera, but a disembodied voice [host Joe Sabia] is asking the questions. So we started thinking it would be funny for Molly to do it, and it also sets the stage for her downsizing. But she really means she’s going from a $200 million house to an $80 million beach cabana.”

When we last left Molly in Loot‘s Season 1 finale, she had just pledged to give away her $120 billion fortune, so naturally, Season 2 kicks off with the news that she sold her mansion, donated the proceeds to charity, and downsized to…a luxury beach cabana with five pools. The information is succinctly shared via 73 Questions, and on top of weaving another realistic celebrity check-in into Loot‘s fictional world, the interview creatively catches viewers up on what they’ve missed in between seasons.

As Loot‘s 73 Questions interviewer follows Molly around her stunning new crib, viewers learn that she’s “on a complete wellness kick,” is “terrified of fish,” and now has an “emotional support sloth” named Arnold. Season 2 Molly shows off her “Jerry Seinfeld at the Gap” impression (“What’s the deal with clothes!?”), her soothing water bed filled with chamomile tea, and her in/out list for the year — another timely trend that suggests Loot‘s writers are hip and extremely online.

Molly sums up the theme of her year in three words — “bad bitch energy” — and Loot lets viewers know it’s stepping up the guest star game by introducing not one, but two 73 Questions cameos. We reunite with Molly’s personal chef David Chang, who she keeps hidden away in her secret kitchen. Then, extreme sports legend Tony Hawk is casually hanging in her backyard waiting to hand her a skateboard and say, “Let’s shred to get shredded.”

Turns out, Hawk is just like us. He’s a big Loot fan — so big that the short but sweet 30-second guest slot (which features no actual skateboarding) came at his personal request.

“The celebrity cameos in the show, they really run the gamut. Sometimes people reach out to us, and I think Tony Hawk watched the show and reached out and asked if he could be in it,” Yang told Decider. “We were like, ‘Yeah! You could be in the first two minutes of the show.’ And we thought that would really be funny to show Tony Hawk teaching Molly how to skateboard.”

After the opening credits roll, Loot keeps the cold open bit going and shows Molly watching her own 73 Questions interview with the Wells Foundation team. “Congrats, cuz. 45 million views? Zendaya only got 25 mil for hers,” Howard (Ron Funches) says in a nod to Zendaya’s real Vogue interview, which now has 26 million views. Unlike Zendaya’s video, the comments on Molly’s tour call her out for being a hypocrite and question when she’s giving her money away, brilliantly teeing up the philanthropic efforts that play out over the rest of the season.

So there you have it, Loot fans. The show’s take on 73 Questions was both hilarious and helpful — not to mention, one of the most memorable days of filming. “That was one of the weirdest days of shooting, where it was like, ‘All right! That’s a wrap on the baby sloth. Now let’s move over here and shoot Tony Hawk,” Yang said with a chuckle.

Since Season 2’s premiere starts on a spectacularly high note, you may fear the remaining nine episodes will falter, but rest assured the sophomore season has plenty more guest stars, belly laughs, and jaw-dropping reveals headed your way.
