A new Matrix movie is officially being developed from Oscar-nominated sci-fi screenwriter Drew Goddard, who is attached to direct and write the new installment.

Lana Wachowski, who co-wrote and co-directed the original trilogy with her sister Lilly, will also return to executive produce after directing The Matrix Resurrections. Sarah Esberg will also produce.

“It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world,” Goddard said, per Deadline.

Warner Bros Motion Pictures President of Production Jesse Ehrman praised Goddard’s pitch for how to continue the iconic series. “Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” he said.

This will be the fourth installment after the 2022 reboot The Matrix Resurrections, which saw Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their iconic roles of Neo and Trinity. For now, it is unclear if the original cast members will be returning for the new installment.

The original Matrix film followed Neo, a computer hacker who learns the world he lives in is actually an elaborate ruse created by evil machines. But Neo soon joins the rebellion to free humanity from their cyber overlords.

Goddard was nominated for Best Screenplay for his work on the 2015 film The Martian. He is also known for his other work within the genre, including cult classics Cloverfield and The Cabin in the Woods. He also wrote World War Z and Bad Times at the El Royale, which he also directed.

Though Lilly expressed ahead of The Matrix Resurrections that the idea of returning to the series was “expressly unappealing,” Lana confessed that working on the franchise helped her get over the death of her parents.”

“It was just this constant grief. My dad died, then this friend died, then my mom died. I didn’t really know how to process that kind of grief. I hadn’t experienced it that closely,” she said. Until “suddenly, my brain just exploded this whole story.”

“I couldn’t have my mom and dad… yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life,” she continued. “It was immediately comforting to have these two characters alive again, and it’s super-simple. … This is what art does and this is what stories do. They comfort us and they’re important.”
