The rumored Jon Snow spinoff series that Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington has been teasing is no longer moving forward, the actor says.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harington candidly spoke on how the show got stuck in development, and why it’s been temporarily shelved.

“It’d only be fair to share this with you if you’re alluding to Jon Snow at all, it’s not happening — and not happening anytime soon anyway,” he said. “We bounced some ideas around and nothing really lit us up. It just didn’t. I think we don’t want to do something that’s not worth it. So for the time being, we’re just shelving it.”

He explained that they struggled to find a fitting story for the character that made a new series worth it.

“I would never have said yes to the idea of developing something with Jon Snow if I didn’t think there was something interesting there, and there could have been,” he said. “But HBO cares about the character a lot and I care about the character a lot, and we don’t want to put out something that is going to sully the character. That’s the worst thing that we could possibly do.”

By the sound of Harington’s comments, it appears that a spinoff could still happen if they find a good enough story to bring the character back.

“Unless we find something in the future that really lands, there’s no point in rushing it. There’s no point in keeping developing for development’s sake and doing something that I don’t want to do,” he said.

For now, Game of Thrones fans have House of the Dragon, which will return with a new season this June.

And another GOT spinoff is already being developed. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is a prequel that has already been ordered straight to series at HBO. Set a century before the events of Game of Thrones, the series follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg.

Peter Claffey was recently cast in the series as Ser Duncan, while Dexter Sol Ansell was cast as Egg. The series will be executive produced by GOT novelist George RR Martin, HOTD showrunner Ryan Condal, as well as Ira Parker and Vince Gerardis.

For now, Harington can be seen in the upcoming film Blood for Dust, which premieres April 19.

Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon can be streamed on Max.
