Former Star Wars actress Gina Carano has fired back at Disney and Lucasfilm, claiming their recent motion to dismiss her wrongful termination lawsuit “confirmed” that she was fired because of her political views.

In the filing, Disney claimed it is within their “constitutional right not to associate its artistic expression with Carano’s speech,” and detailed how her behavior on social media led to her being fired from The Mandalorian in 2021.

The actress and former MMA fighter responded with a post on X, writing, “Disney has confirmed what has been known all along, they will fire you if you say anything they disagree with, even if they have to MISREPRESENT, MALIGN, and MISCHARACTERIZE you to do it.”

The company claimed that she “grotesquely trivialized the Holocaust as comparable to sharp political disagreements,” pointing directly to a post that she shared on Instagram that read, “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?’”

This came after Carano already faced backlash for her posts criticizing vaccines and the 2020 election. According to the filing, this post was “the final straw for Disney.”

Carano filed her lawsuit in March of this year, almost three years after she was fired from The Mandalorian and written off the show. Her lawsuit alleges that Disney and Lucasfilm “targeted, harassed, publicly humiliated, defamed, and went to great lengths to destroy Carano’s career, all because she made political statements that did not align with what they believed was an acceptable viewpoint.”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter after she filed her lawsuit, Carano pointed to a very different moment on social media that felt like “the start of the end” for her career. At the time, she had been facing pressure to share her pronouns on her Twitter profile in solidarity with the trans community. But she instead made what she thought was a “cute” joke by listing “boop/bop/beep” as her pronouns.

She revealed that the controversial move sparked a “massive meltdown” at Disney and Lucasfilm. The companies allegedly made her go through a sensitivity training – which she referred to as a “reeducation camp” – with two transgender representatives from GLAAD.

She said she was also asked to issue an apology, or “one of those statements that almost makes you roll your eyes,” as she put it. Carano personally wrote a draft of the apology but the effort was ultimately abandoned after it received several edits.

“A 20-year career, the blood, sweat and tears of fighting? I never compromised myself for a job. I never ended in a bad situation where I did anything inappropriate. I had a clean and clear climb to where I got to and was going to just keep going. And boop/bop/beep was that harmful?” she said.

Per THR, Carano “harbors no regrets,” but claims she underwent “one of the most aggressive unnecessary cancellations in Hollywood history.”

The actress seeks damages of at least $75,000 and to be hired back onto the show. She also seeks compensation for the prospective opportunities she had at the time, including the spinoff series Rangers of The New Republic.
