Jerry Seinfeld stood up for his longtime collaborator and friend Larry David during a recent appearance on Today With Hoda & Jenna.

David famously got into an altercation with Sesame Street star Elmo on Today earlier this year. Though he caught some heat for it, Seinfeld said David was right to do it.

“Did you see when Larry David was here and he attacked Elmo?” Today host Jenna Bush Hager asked Seinfeld, as Hoda Kotb somberly noted, “It was sad.”

Seinfeld wasn’t so “sad” about it, however. “No, I liked it,” he replied. “I enjoyed that.”

“No, no, Elmo is an American treasure!” Bush Hager said.

But in true Seinfeld fashion, he wasn’t so sure. “Well, even treasures need a beating once in a while,” he said.

The comment made both Today hosts laugh as Bush Hager commented, “You’re just standing up for your friend, that is not true.”

The hilarious moment occurred this past February when David interrupted the live Today broadcast to take a swing at Elmo, prompting the Sesame Street character to tell him, “Elmo loved you before!”

Despite just being assaulted, Elmo still urged David to “get back on the couch so we can talk about your feelings.”

Elmo was also visiting the show with his dad, Louie, who took a moment to warn David to “ask permission before you touch people.”

The bizarre moment felt like it was straight out of an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, especially after Today host Savannah Guthrie warned David that he had “gone too far this time.”

To the surprise of nobody at all, David stood by his shocking decision, exclaiming from off-camera, “Somebody had to do it!”

He later apologized to Elmo after Kotb encouraged him to speak “from [his] heart.” But the moment still angered Stand By Me star Wil Wheaton, who later called David a “stupid, self-centered, tone deaf asshole” for the stunt.

“What the fuck is wrong with that guy? Elmo is, like, the best friend to multiple generations of children. In the Sesame Street universe, ELMO IS A CHILD, who is currently putting mental health and caring for others in the spotlight,” he said in a rant shared on Facebook.

Today with Hoda and Jenna airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
