Jake Gyllenhaal looks guilty as hell in the official teaser trailer for Apple TV+‘s upcoming legal thriller, Presumed Innocent. But is he? Only time will tell…

Based on Scott Turow’s bestselling 1987 novel (also a 1990 film starring Harrison Ford), the eight-episode limited series will follow a murder case that finds the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney office’s chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Gyllenhaal) as a chief suspect.

Presumed Innocent‘s minute-long teaser, located at the top of this article, gives viewers a glimpse at steamy sex scenes between Gyllenhaal’s Rusty and Renate Reinsve’s Carolyn before revealing news of her horrific death. Spliced with shots of Chicago police cars and high-tension scenes courtroom, fight, and family scenes, the teaser crafts a captivating, terrifying viewing experience — one heightened by the use of sound, specifically the haunting chime of a spoon tapping a coffee mug three times.

“Love isn’t what people tell you that it is. In my experience it’s just something that grows, until one day you just find yourself needing someone,” Gyllenhaal says over the teaser trailer in a voiceover. “That’s how it was with Carolyn. She woke something up inside me.”

As the sexy, dangerous, obsessive teaser continues, Gyllenhaal’s Rusty admits, “I can’t stop thinking about her.” In a final scene, Rusty is asked, “Were you aware that Carolyn was murdered?” and his face goes blank. He shakes his head side to side, but from what we can see, he doesn’t confirm or deny the knowledge.

Gyllenhaal’s character may be presumed innocent, but will he be proven guilty? We’ll have to tune in and see.

Hailing from Emmy Award-winning executive producers David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams (with Gyllenhaal serving as an EP as well), Presumed Innocent premieres its first two episodes on June 12, 2024.
