Jeff Daniels may be the star of A Man in Full, but in a delightful twist, it’s Grammy-winning singer Shania Twain who puts the “MAN!” in Netflix’s new limited series.

Based on Tom Wolfe’s bestselling novel of the same name, A Man in Full follows Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker (Daniels) as he fights to save his business empire from bankruptcy. Written by David E. Kelley; directed by EP Regina King; and starring big names including Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, and William Jackson Harper, A Man in Full has its fair share of draws. But the appeal starts with Shania Twain, who gives not one but two spectacular performances in the show’s opening minutes.

The pilot, directed by King, opens on an aerial shot of Crocker lying on the floor as a voiceover from Daniels says, “I don’t mean this as a criticism. Maybe I do. But when you die, will people notice? When I go there are gonna be a lot of memories about me by a lot of people — many who hate me. Even so, a person needs to live with vigor, otherwise what’s the point? End of the day a man’s gotta shake his balls.” It’s a dark, perplexing, slightly gross opening shot that sets a somewhat somber tone, but the vibes quickly rebound when “10 DAYS EARLIER” flashes on the screen and Shania Twain’s voice beams: “LET’S GO GIRLS!”

As “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” blares, a montage shows a Crocker building lit up at night, shots of the city, and a “Happy 60th Birthday Charlie!” sign outside a venue alongside blown up magazine covers that feature him. The camera takes us inside Charlie’s swanky birthday bash, where we learn the great Shania Twain isn’t simply part of A Man in Full‘s soundtrack, she’s physically performing at the businessman’s bash.

In front of a packed dance floor, Shania Twain slays on stage looking stunning in a sequin jumpsuit. She sports large hoop earrings. She has backup dancers. She sounds straight-up angelic. And for some unknown reason she’s there to celebrate Charlie Crocker, one of the most odious TV characters I’ve witnessed this year.

When A Man in Full switches scenes and leaves the party behind, viewers will feel blessed to have basked in Shania Twain’s talent for a few moments. But just know, the fun doesn’t stop there. When Alm Ameen’s character Roger White arrives fashionably late and asks if he’s missed anything, a guest says, “Full Charlie with a splash of Shania Twain” as we overhear the singer saying, “Happy birthday Charlie, the man who built Atlanta” into the mic.

Just when you think the spotlight’s off Shania, she returns to sing another hit — “You’re Still the One” — in an intimate seated performance complete with guitar playing and original lyrics.

“Looks like we made it, Charlie, look how far we’ve come my baby,” she sings as Croker stands in the middle of the dance floor and looks on lovingly. He blows Shania a kiss, dances with his wife, and fully soaks up the musical magic of Ms. Twain, who’s been having quite a moment on television the past year.

Fans of Twain, Kim Kardashian, or Lukas Gage and Chris Appleton will recall that Twain also performed “You’re Still the One” on an episode of The Kardashians back in 2023. Kardashian surprised pals and (former) lovebirds Appleton and Gage with an intimate performance, only for them to get divorced several months after they tied the knot in Vegas.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Gage apologized to Twain for “the biggest waste of her time,” saying, “I mean, ‘We’re still holding on,’ ‘You’re still the one’ after, like, three weeks? That was unhinged.”

“If you’re not in it for love, I’m outta here!” the country singer tweeted in response, reminding us she’s iconic.

Whether she’s performing on scripted series like A Man in Full or serenading celebs on reality shows like The Kardashians, TV could use more Shania Twain going forward. What I’m trying to say is after all this time, she DOES impress me much.

A Man in Full is now streaming on Netflix.
