The Hulu drama We Were the Lucky Ones is based on Georgia Hunter’s best-selling book of the same name and follows the Kurc family as they are separated during the Holocaust. The penultimate episode ends on an emotional note with one of the family members being arrested after reuniting with her sibling. What happens in the final episode? Does the Kurc family reunite?

The show premiered on March 28, 2024, and aired new episodes weekly on Thursdays through May 2, 2024. At the time of reporting, the limited series has amassed a 96% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes.

Decider’s Joel Keller praised the show in his review, writing, “We Were The Lucky Ones is one of those kinds of shows that have the ‘quality’ label all over it, from the settings to the costumes to the performances and the historical significance of the story.”

At the beginning of Episode 8, “Rio,” Halina Kurc (Joey King) is still in prison. The guards don’t believe her when she lies and pleads that she isn’t Jewish. Halina has a rough time behind bars and is treated with brutality. After three months, she’s released and eventually reunites with her lover Adam Eichenwald (Sam Woolf).

The show takes a time jump to 1945 and cuts to Poland where Jakob Kurc (Amit Rahav) and Bella (Eva Feiler) discover that they are expecting a child. Checking in on the rest of the family, Mila and her daughter Felicia are still mentally recovering from their separation, and Halina and Adam have reunited with the Kurc matriarch Nechuma Kurc (Robin Weigert), who has been hiding in a small closet until a staircase.

Shortly after, it’s announced that Germany has surrendered in the war. Addy Kurc (Logan Lerman), who’s living in Rio with his girlfriend, reacts to the news with joy.

What happens next? Here’s a breakout of the hopeful ending and how it connects to the first episode of the series.

We Were the Lucky Ones Ending Explained

With the war over, Nechuma has returned to her family home in hopes of obtaining her mail and a few artifacts that they left after going into hiding. However, she’s met with resistance from the family who has moved in. They refuse to let her inside. Nechuma yells, “This is our home” and bangs on the door until Halina and Sol Kurc (Lior Ashkenazi) convince her to leave.

Meanwhile, Adam sees on a list that this family had died during the war and he mourns over his loss, and Bella decides that she wants to move to Germany after having the baby to reunite with her only living relative, her uncle. Halina is devastated by Bella’s decision and later finds out that she’s pregnant herself.

Eventually, the Kurc family reunites with the eldest sibling Genek (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), who had been serving in the Polish Army. He introduces a new family member, revealing that his wife has had a child. Mila’s husband Selim (Michael Aloni) also returns and has a tearjerking reunion with his daughter Felicia.

After another time jump, Bella and Jakob leave on a train with their newborn and Addy finally receives word that his family is alive. He boards a boat to reunite with them.

The Kurc family is last shown in 1947 at Passover — roughly nine years after the first episode, which sees Addy visiting home for the spring holiday. The family reflects on those they’ve lost before enjoying a meal together.

We Were the Lucky Ones concludes with an end card segment revealing that the real-life Kurc family had moved all around the world, but maintained their tight-knit relationship.
