‘Outlander’ Season 8: Everything We Know So Far About the Final Season of the Starz Hit Show

Sing me a song of a show that has been long gone, say could that show be Outlander? Starz‘s flagship romantic period drama/fantasy adventure series hasn’t returned to our screens since Summer 2024. Although Outlander Season 7 Part 2 won’t premiere until November 2024, fans are already feverishly looking ahead to Outlander Season 8. The eighth and final season of Outlander is currently in production in Scotland and stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe have been diligently sharing sweet updates on the progress via Instagram. We’ve already learned that some fan favorite characters will return in Season 8 and that, yes, the stars are ready to bid a bittersweet farewell to the show they’ve worked on for over a decade. Even if they know saying goodbye to Jamie Claire is going to be as difficult for them to do as it will be for Outlander‘s ardent fans.

“It’s going to be hard, isn’t it?” Sam Heughan said in Summer 2023. “It’s going to be very sad to say goodbye not only to the characters and the world, but I guess to the crew and our other friends. So I guess we’ll see each other again won’t we? We’ll hang out.”

“Yeah,” Caitriona Balfe said. “But you know, I do think it’ll be a decade. In fact, by the time we finished the next season, it’ll be more than a decade and I think, you know, it’s been such a privilege and such an honor to spend that much time playing these characters.”

Heughan added: “There’ll be over 100 episodes of Outlander so there’s plenty there for fans to re-binge.”

Outlander first debuted on Starz all the way back in 2014. It was a dark time, before there were mainstream bodice rippers like Bridgerton on Netflix. The people hungered for a historic romance full of sex scenes and plot twists. Only Starz’s Outlander rose to the challenge and only Starz’s Outlander has continued to give its audience what it wants time and time again.

Will There Be an Outlander Season 8 on Starz?

Yes, there will be! Starz has already confirmed that Outlander will return for an eighth and final season. In fact, Outlander Season 8 went into production in late March. On April 1, 2024, the official Outlander Instagram account shared a video wherein Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan teasingly revealed the return of actors Lauren Lyle and Cesar Domboy to Season 8 (or Marsali and Fergus).

Note that we still haven’t seen all of Outlander Season 7. The current, penultimate season of Outlander was split into two halves, with Outlander Part 1 — Episodes 1 through 8 — premiering on Starz last summer. Outlander Season 7 Part 2 will premiere later in 2024. (More on that below!)

When Will Outlander Season 8 Premiere on Starz?

We don’t know yet! Outlander Season 7 will premiere in November 2024, meaning that we might not see Outlander Season 8 until late 2025 or even later!

All we do know right now is that Outlander Season 8 is happening…and it’s not really the end for the Outlander saga on Starz…

Will There Be an Outlander Season 9?

Alas, there will not! Outlander is ending with Season 8. However, Davis has teased to Decider that she would perhaps like to come back and adapt Outlander author Diana Gabaldon’s future books in the series.

“I mean, if it was just up to Maril Davis, I would love to see this through to the end of the book series,” she said. “Maybe we’ll do a different iteration in the future. You know, maybe we’ll come back and tell the end of the story.”

When Decider asked Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe if they would be open to returning to the roles in the future, Balfe said, “I think you never say never. The door’s always open so we’ll see.”

Will There Be an Outlander Spin-Off? All About Prequel Series Outlander: Blood of my Blood:

Can’t let go of the world of Outlander? Another series, a prequel show called Outlander: Blood of my Blood, is also currently in production in Scotland. That series will tell the story of Jamie and Claire’s own parents. Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy play Jamie’s parents, the star-crossed Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, while Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine will be Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp.

Because Outlander: Blood of my Blood went into production a bit before Outlander Season 8, it’s possible we’ll see that series premiere before the final season of the flagship show appears.

Why is Outlander Ending With Season 8?

It’s unclear why Starz and the Outlander team decided to end the series with Season 8, but Maril Davis explained it had something to do with the fact that Diana Gabaldon is still working on Book 10 and the series is about to catch up with the books. They would have to pause production for years at a time to wait for future books to be finished and it seems some of the cast and crew wants to explore new creative opportunities.

“You know, people want to stretch their wings and do other things,” Davis said.

“By the time we finished the next season, it’ll be more than a decade,” Catriona Balfe told Decider. “It’s been such a privilege and such an honor to spend that much time playing these characters, but I think it’s also time for us to try new challenges and to have new experiences.”
