Steve Carell shared his thoughts and praise for Peacock’s upcoming follow-up to The Office, which will focus on a dying newspaper instead of a small-town paper company. He also answered the question at the top of everyone’s minds since the news broke: Will we be seeing Michael Scott again?

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Carell said, “I will be watching but I will not be showing up. It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character [Michael Scott] to show up in something like that.”

But the actor still had some praise to share for Peacock’s new iteration of The Office and his former co-star Domhnall Gleeson, who will reportedly be leading the series alongside White Lotus actress Sabrina Impacciatore.

“But I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a family newspaper company,” Carell said. “And I worked with Domhnall Gleeson, who is one of the leads. I did The Patient with him and he’s an excellent actor and a super nice guy so I think it’ll be great.”

The series is being developed by The Office creator Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, co-creator and executive producer of Nathan For You. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, who worked on the original U.K. version of The Office, will also executive produce.

While it is not necessarily a reboot or a spinoff, the series will be set in the same universe as Dunder Mifflin.

“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters,” the logline for the untitled project reads, per a release shared with DECIDER.

More casting news is sure to come. Deadline reports that “casting continues with a focus on the office staff and potentially one more series lead.”

Production is slated to start later this summer. Daniels has reportedly staffed a “small group” of “trusted writers” to begin writing Season 1.
