Actor Dabney Coleman died on Thursday (May 16), TMZ reports. He was 92.
Born in 1932 in Austin, Texas, Coleman attended the Virginia Military Institute and the University Of Texas School Of Law, and also served in the military ahead of launching his career in the entertainment industry, per the Hollywood Walk of Fame website.
Coleman earned one of his first TV credits in an episode of Naked City in 1961, per IMDb. He would go on to appear in countless TV spots over the course of his career, including The Donna Reed Show, I Dream of Jeannie, Columbo, Law & Order: SVU, Recess The Guardian, Boardwalk Empire, and Ray Donovan.
He starred in Norman Lear‘s Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman as Merle Jeeter, and also portrayed the role in spinoffs Fernwood Tonight and Forever Fernwood.
In 1980, Coleman scored two of his most notable credits: Melvin and Howard — which earned two Oscars — and 9 to 5, where he portrayed the villainous boss Franklin Hart, Jr and starred alongside Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, and Lily Tomlin. He then starred in the 1981 drama On Golden Pond, and then played Ron Carlisle in the hit rom-com Tootsie, which was released the following year.

He earned an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie in Sworn to Silence, a 1987 TV movie that also featured Liam Neeson and Peter Coyote. Among his other film credits are WarGames (1983), You’ve Got Mail (1987), and Stuart Little (1999).
The late actor was bestowed a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014. Coleman earned his latest credit on a 2019 episode of Yellowstone, where he played John Dutton Sr.
