In 2023, FOX canceled two beloved, long-running dramas after their sixth seasons: The Resident and 9-1-1.

A year later, both shows are thriving in their own ways, and actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner plays a major role in each.

When chatting with Decider about his four-episode guest arc on 9-1-1, which was renewed by ABC for a Season 7 (and now a Season 8) post-cancellation, the actor took a moment to discuss his love of The Resident and thoughts on a potential return down the line.

“I think one of the best things about that show is how much we as a cast loved and still love one another. I think we would all jump at the opportunity to be able to work together again,” Warner said.

Though The Resident has yet to be saved after getting the axe last year, much like Suits before it, the medical drama has been finding a new audience and dominating streaming ratings since all six seasons were recently added to Netflix.

If The Resident were to be saved from cancelation going forward, Warner assured Decider the cast wouldn’t need much time to reconnect.

“Matt [Czuchry] was just here last night. We were just hanging out last night. And I just saw Bruce [Greenwood] a couple of weeks ago,” Warner explained. “We all really, really dig each other. So I think if we had the opportunity to work together again, we would be like, ‘Yeah, man!”

Back in March, The Resident‘s co-creator Amy Holden Jones announced on X that the series had made it into Netflix’s Top 10 TV Shows list. Warner proudly shared the post, adding, “Appreciation and gratitude runs high. Thank you, friends…”

Since then, Jones has shared several other articles on The Resident‘s high streaming ratings to X, writing, “Trying to wrap my head around the fact that something that came out of my head got 1.5 BILLION [minutes watched]” on April 25.

As fans saw with 9-1-1‘s top-rated Season 7 — plus its early Season 8 renewal — it’s possible for canceled shows to return stronger and continue to find success on a new network or platform. We all know Suits got a modern-day Los Angeles-set spinoff after its record-breaking streaming success, so who knows what the future has in store for The Resident.

For now, you can stream all six seasons of The Resident on Netflix and catch star Malcolm-Jamal Warner in 9-1-1 Season 7, airing Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. with next-day streaming on Hulu.
